Disease description:

My father used to love eating chestnuts, but after being diagnosed with gout, he stopped eating them altogether. I’d like to ask: Can people with gout still eat chestnuts?

Patients with gout may consume chestnuts in moderation. Clinically, gout primarily results from long-standing hyperuricemia—persistently elevated serum uric acid levels—which leads to excessive deposition of urate crystals in tissues and joints. Chestnuts are predominantly composed of starch and contain relatively low levels of purines; therefore, moderate consumption is unlikely to significantly affect the condition. However, overconsumption should be avoided. Patients should drink ample water when eating chestnuts to promote uric acid excretion. Additionally, gout patients are encouraged to consume plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits to support healthy metabolism. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
