Disease description:

My father used to enjoy eating chestnuts frequently, even when he had no health concerns. However, after being diagnosed with gout, he stopped eating them. I’d like to ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat chestnuts?

Patients with gout may consume chestnuts in moderation. Clinically, gout primarily results from long-standing hyperuricemia—persistently elevated serum uric acid levels—which leads to excessive deposition of urate crystals in tissues and joints. Chestnuts are rich in starch but relatively low in purines; therefore, moderate consumption is unlikely to significantly affect gout symptoms. However, overconsumption should be avoided. While eating chestnuts, patients should drink ample water to promote uric acid excretion. Additionally, gout patients are encouraged to consume plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits to support healthy metabolism. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
