Disease description:

I was involved in a car accident and sustained a leg fracture. I’m now nearly fully recovered, but I feel there may be some lingering aftereffects. I’d like to know: What are the possible sequelae of a fracture?

A fracture refers to a disruption in the structural integrity of a bone, typically caused by trauma or disease. Potential sequelae of fractures include pain, swelling, muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and restricted mobility. If treatment is inadequate or recovery is incomplete during the bone-healing process, long-term functional impairment may result. For instance, nonunion or delayed/poor bone healing may occur after a fracture, necessitating further surgical intervention or physical therapy. Additionally, prolonged bed rest can lead to osteoporosis and muscle atrophy, increasing the patient’s risk of mobility difficulties later in life. Management of fracture sequelae requires a comprehensive, individualized approach—incorporating physical therapy, pharmacotherapy, and, when indicated, surgical intervention. With active rehabilitation and appropriate treatment, most fracture-related sequelae can be significantly improved.
