Which department should I visit for phimosis or redundant prepuce?
Disease description:
I’m experiencing painful urination and significant discomfort. I suspect it’s related to phimosis or redundant prepuce. Could you please advise which department I should visit?
Phimosis and redundant prepuce should be evaluated by a urologist or an andrologist. In patients with phimosis, the external preputial orifice is typically narrowed, preventing retraction of the foreskin and exposure of the glans penis. This leads to chronic urine retention beneath the foreskin and recurrent inflammation of the foreskin and glans. Urinary residues combine with secretions from the foreskin and glans to form smegma, which harbors large numbers of pathogenic microorganisms. Smegma irritates the foreskin and glans, predisposing them to local adhesions and recurrent inflammation; prolonged irritation may even increase the risk of malignant transformation of the penile skin.
