An AFI exceeding 20 cm indicates polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid), while an AFI below 8 cm suggests oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid). An AFI under 5 cm is classified as severe oligohydramnios. Both polyhydramnios and oligohydramnios may adversely affect fetal development and increase the risk of congenital anomalies.
