What is the normal amniotic fluid index (AFI) in millimeters?
Disease description:
During my recent prenatal checkup, I had my amniotic fluid assessed. Doctor, what is the normal amniotic fluid index (AFI) in millimeters?
Hello,
The normal amniotic fluid index (AFI) ranges from 80 to 250 mm. An AFI below 50 mm is defined as oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid), while an AFI above 250 mm is defined as polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid). During prenatal ultrasound examinations, the sonographer typically reports two measurements related to amniotic fluid: the amniotic fluid index (AFI) and the maximum vertical pocket (MVP) depth.
The normal MVP depth ranges from 30 to 70 mm. An MVP depth less than 20 mm indicates oligohydramnios, whereas an MVP depth greater than 80 mm indicates polyhydramnios.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
