What is the normal range for the amniotic fluid index?
At almost 32 weeks pregnant, I had an ultrasound examination today. After seeing the amniotic fluid index value on the report, I felt uncertain. I would like to know what is considered a normal amniotic fluid index value?

The normal amniotic fluid index (AFI) range is typically between 5-25 cm.
The amniotic fluid index is an important indicator used to assess whether the amount of amniotic fluid is normal. It is usually measured via ultrasound during the second and third trimesters. Specifically, an AFI between 5-25 cm is considered normal, indicating an appropriate volume of amniotic fluid that supports the healthy development of the fetus.
If the amniotic fluid index is less than 5 cm, it may indicate oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid), which could be a sign of fetal developmental abnormalities, placental insufficiency, or other medical conditions.
If the amniotic fluid index exceeds 25 cm, it may suggest polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid), which may also be associated with fetal or maternal disorders, such as fetal gastrointestinal abnormalities, twin or multiple pregnancies.
The amniotic fluid index can be influenced by various factors, including individual differences among pregnant women and the growth and development of the fetus. Therefore, during prenatal examinations, doctors will evaluate the amniotic fluid volume based on the individual circumstances of the pregnant woman, along with other test results, to determine whether the fluid level is normal and whether further intervention is necessary.
