Disease description:

I have developed extensive oral ulcers at the corners of my mouth, but my doctor mentioned they might instead be due to Behçet’s disease. What are the differences between oral ulcers and Behçet’s disease?

Dr. Zhang Liwen
The distinction between oral ulcers and Behçet’s disease lies in the severity of the condition and the locations affected. Oral ulcers typically manifest as erosions or ulcers on the oral mucosa and are generally mild; they usually resolve spontaneously within approximately one to two weeks. In contrast, Behçet’s disease not only causes oral ulcers but may also produce ulcerative lesions of varying severity in the eyes, skin, and joints. This condition is comparatively more severe and does not resolve spontaneously; prompt medical evaluation and treatment are therefore essential.
