My brother overexerted himself with running a few days ago, resulting in a hamstring strain. How long does it typically take for a hamstring strain to heal?

Dr. Lin Yunfei
Recovery from a hamstring strain typically takes approximately 1 to 3 months. For mild hamstring strains, normal function is usually restored within about one month; during this period, intense physical activity should be avoided, and adequate rest is essential to promote healing. Apply cold compresses within the first 24 hours after injury, followed by heat therapy after 24 hours to aid muscle recovery and shorten healing time. In cases of severe (deep) hamstring strains, recovery may take significantly longer—some patients even require immobilization with a cast—and full recovery generally takes around three months.
