What does it mean to have low high-density lipoprotein (HDL)?
Disease description:
I always feel uncomfortable in my chest and experience dizziness. My doctor said it’s due to low high-density lipoprotein (HDL). So I’d like to ask—what does “low HDL” mean?
Hello,
A reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level indicates abnormal blood lipid levels. Unhealthy habits—such as excessive intake of fatty foods, prolonged sedentary behavior, and binge eating—can easily lead to dyslipidemia. HDL levels are also influenced by genetic factors. Conditions and factors that may lower HDL include obesity, severe malnutrition, advancing age, estrogen deficiency, certain medications, high-fat diets, smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, biliary tract diseases, cirrhosis, hepatitis, and chronic alcohol intoxication. Patients with hypertriglyceridemia often concurrently exhibit low HDL-C levels.
We hope the above information is helpful to you. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
