How is an Achilles tendon rupture treated?
Disease description:
Accidentally fell into a large pit and injured my foot; a hospital examination diagnosed a ruptured Achilles tendon. I would like to ask how a ruptured Achilles tendon is treated.
Surgical treatment. Currently, there are multiple treatment options for Achilles tendon rupture, with the primary goal being restoration of tendon continuity. For acute (fresh) Achilles tendon ruptures, surgery is recommended within 48 hours—or ideally within 24 hours—to restore tendon continuity. For chronic partial ruptures where some fibrous connections remain intact, procedures such as gastrocnemius muscle flap reconstruction or Achilles tendon lengthening may be performed to restore tendon continuity. Rehabilitation training typically begins one and a half months postoperatively, with full recovery generally achieved by three months.
