This symptom is typically caused by accidental trauma or friction; therefore, cold compresses can be applied to effectively alleviate it. Pain in the bone of the big toe may result from a fracture due to trauma or from arthritis. If the pain is caused by a fracture, reduction and immobilization with a cast are required. If it is due to arthritis, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be administered, strictly following the physician’s instructions.
