My husband and I have been married for three years. Because my husband has albinism, we have been hesitant to have children. Could you please explain how albinism is inherited?

Dr. Liu Wan
Albinism is primarily inherited through autosomal recessive and X-linked recessive patterns. In autosomal recessive inheritance, both parents carry the disease-causing gene but remain asymptomatic themselves; however, they can pass the condition to their children, affecting both sons and daughters equally. In X-linked recessive inheritance, if the mother carries the disease-causing gene, each son has a 50% chance of being affected, while daughters are either unaffected or become carriers. If the father carries the disease-causing gene, all sons will be unaffected, whereas daughters will not develop the disease but will be carriers. Thus, X-linked recessive inheritance predominantly affects males.
