Where does esophagitis cause pain, and what are its symptoms?
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve been experiencing throat pain while eating. After an examination, my doctor diagnosed me with esophagitis. I’m quite concerned and would like to know: Where does esophagitis cause pain, and what are its symptoms?
Esophagitis primarily manifests as retrosternal pain, which may be associated with swallowing and can present as odynophagia—the sensation of pain during swallowing. A hallmark feature is worsening of pain with swallowing; in severe cases, even swallowing saliva causes discomfort. This is commonly seen in infectious, drug-induced, or radiation-induced esophagitis. Clinical manifestations vary depending on the type of esophagitis but frequently include gastroesophageal reflux (acid regurgitation), heartburn, chest pain, and dysphagia.
