Genital herpes symptoms typically require antiviral and analgesic medications prescribed by a healthcare provider—such as aspirin, acetaminophen, acyclovir, or ganciclovir—and topical antiviral ointments may also be used to promote healing. If secondary bacterial or fungal infection is present, antibiotics such as amoxicillin may be necessary. During treatment, the genital area should be cleansed with normal saline, loose-fitting and breathable underwear should be worn, and sexual activity should be avoided.
