Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Disease description:
Recently, my mother has been experiencing acid reflux and stomach pain. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, her doctor diagnosed her with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). What are the symptoms of GERD?
Common symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) include acid regurgitation, heartburn, epigastric pain, retrosternal pain, and a sensation of food sticking or obstruction during swallowing. GERD—also known as reflux esophagitis—is primarily caused by the backflow of gastric acid into the esophagus. Treatment typically involves oral medications prescribed by a physician to suppress gastric acid secretion and protect the gastric mucosa.
