Can rectal polyps cause left lower abdominal pain?
Disease description:
A colleague went to the hospital for a checkup the other day and was diagnosed with a rectal polyp. However, he is experiencing abdominal pain—could a rectal polyp cause left lower quadrant abdominal pain?
Rectal polyps may cause left lower abdominal pain. In the early (precancerous) stage, intestinal polyps often produce no specific symptoms; however, as the condition progresses, patients may experience hematochezia (bright red blood in stool), melena (black, tarry stools), abdominal pain, diarrhea, or mucoid bloody stools. A small proportion of patients may present with left-sided abdominal pain and, in some cases, systemic symptoms such as anemia and weight loss. Left lower abdominal pain has numerous potential causes, including urinary tract stones, gynecological inflammation, and colorectal tumors.
