Causes of gastric bleeding include irregular eating habits and liver cirrhosis. Smoking, alcohol consumption, and chronic sleep deprivation can also lead to gastric ulcers. When the gastric mucosa at the ulcer site ruptures and invades nearby blood vessels, it may cause vessel rupture and subsequent gastric bleeding. Liver cirrhosis can induce gastric bleeding—particularly via gastric fundal and esophageal varices; ingestion of hard foods may rupture these varices, resulting in massive hemorrhage. Prompt hemostasis is typically required; otherwise, hemorrhagic shock may readily develop.
