What causes urgency to urinate?
Disease description:
Recently, I've been experiencing frequent urgency to urinate, with difficulty holding it in, and almost had accidents several times. I'd like to know what could be causing this urinary urgency?
Urgency usually refers to a sudden, compelling need to urinate as soon as the patient feels the urge, with difficulty in controlling it. It is generally caused by infectious diseases such as acute cystitis, acute prostatitis, or acute pyelonephritis. Patients may experience symptoms including urgency, frequency, and dysuria; these symptoms often improve after treatment with antibiotics. Urgency may also result from bladder contraction, commonly seen after partial cystectomy or due to tuberculosis of the urinary tract, which significantly reduces bladder capacity and leads to symptoms of urgency and frequency.
