The sequelae of poliomyelitis include muscle atrophy, primarily caused by prolonged inability to move normally. It may also be complicated by myocardial disease and bronchitis, as the body experiences severe oxygen deprivation during the acute phase of the illness. Some patients are unable to maintain proper posture during the illness; prolonged incorrect sitting or walking postures can lead to joint lesions and subsequently result in joint deformities.
