Disease description:

I was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia last week, and I started having a urinary catheter inserted this week. However, I still feel bladder fullness and urgency to urinate. I would like to ask, what should I do about persistent bladder fullness after catheterization for benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition in which such urinary retention may occur. Please observe the color of the inflow into the urethra. Gently press the lower abdomen with your hand to observe urine flow. If urine flows smoothly after applying pressure and no obvious clots are present, the obstruction may be due to spasm. Reduce the volume of the balloon catheter to prevent excessive compression and irritation of the bladder neck. If necessary, medications such as tamsulosin that relieve spasms can be used. If there is significant discomfort, sedatives may also be administered when needed.
