How to care for uveitis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus
Disease description:
I have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and recently I've been experiencing eye discomfort. After a hospital examination, the doctor diagnosed me with uveitis. I would like to know how to care for uveitis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.
The treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with uveitis includes both local and systemic therapy. Local treatment mainly involves topical corticosteroids or subcutaneous injection at the lesion site, including subcutaneous interferon injections. Systemic treatment includes antimalarial drugs, commonly chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine. Immunosuppressive agents and corticosteroids are primarily used in patients with hemorrhagic lesions, renal involvement, central nervous system involvement, retinal vasculitis, and severe scleritis. For patients with refractory systemic disease or retinal vascular lesions who do not respond to corticosteroids, agents such as cyclophosphamide and azathioprine should be considered.
