Disease description:

I injured my foot while playing basketball two days ago. It has been painful and slightly swollen ever since. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but the pain worsened the next day. After visiting the hospital for imaging, the diagnosis was bone marrow edema. Could you please explain what this condition is?

Hello, bone marrow edema can be categorized into physiological and secondary types. Physiological bone marrow edema may result from prolonged external mechanical stress or excessive loading, leading to skeletal changes; in such cases, symptoms typically resolve after approximately two weeks of rest. Secondary bone marrow edema, on the other hand, may arise from pathogen infection, tumors, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or trauma—conditions that increase local capillary permeability. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
