Bell's palsy, also known as idiopathic facial paralysis or commonly referred to as facial neuritis, is a peripheral facial paralysis caused by acute nonspecific inflammation of the intracanalicular segment of the facial nerve. Bell's palsy and geniculate ganglion syndrome are common types of facial neuritis. Clinically, Bell's palsy is believed to be caused by neurotropic viruses.
