Whether iron deficiency anemia causes fetal hypoxia depends on the individual patient's condition. In cases of mild anemia, the fetus may become iron deficient, leading to iron deficiency anemia in the newborn. Iron deficiency anemia is a major cause of chronic fetal hypoxia. The optimal period for infant brain development is from gestation through 6 months after birth. If iron is lacking during the early stages of brain development, it can lead to abnormalities in brain cell energy metabolism, function, and neurotransmitters, resulting in impaired intellectual development.
