Perianal abscess is caused by infection of the perianal space. The main symptom is pain, which worsens with excessive defecation and may be accompanied by chills, fever, and headache. Mild perianal abscesses can heal with local sitz baths and antibiotic treatment. However, most cases require surgical drainage to remove the pus. Anti-inflammatory medications are needed after surgery.
