What are the symptoms of moderate pericardial effusion?
Disease description:
My grandfather hasn't been feeling well lately. During a hospital checkup, he was diagnosed with exudative pericarditis and pericardial effusion. I would like to know what symptoms are associated with moderate pericardial effusion?
Mild pericardial effusion may not cause symptoms of dyspnea; however, if the fluid accumulation is excessive, shortness of breath can occur. In severe cases, patients may develop orthopnea (inability to lie flat), and even cyanosis of the lips. Other possible symptoms include upper abdominal pain, hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), and generalized edema. Treatment for pericardial effusion involves medication or surgical intervention. Small amounts of effusion can be managed with oral anti-inflammatory drugs.
