Disease description:

During a community health checkup, they said I might have pericardial effusion. Do I need to have the fluid drained if it's moderate in amount?

Determine whether drainage is necessary based on the patient's condition. If pericardial effusion persists for more than several months, it may develop into chronic pericarditis. During the initial pericardiocentesis, it is recommended to slow down the fluid withdrawal rate, and closely monitor the patient for any discomfort symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. After the procedure, patients should be advised to protect the wound and prevent infection. Any post-procedural discomfort should be promptly treated.
