Can pericardial effusion cause hypoxemia?
Disease description:
I've had pericardial effusion for several years. Today I was diagnosed with hypoxemia, and I'm worried it might be caused by the pericardial effusion. Can myocardial infarction also cause hypoxemia?
No. However, when a patient develops a large amount of fluid, a certain volume of fluid can compress the circulating blood in the heart. When cardiac function is affected, blood oxygen saturation will be compromised. Consequently, patients may develop clinical symptoms such as dyspnea and hoarseness. Hypoxia leads to partial pressure of oxygen and blood oxygen saturation below the normal lower limit for individuals of the same age. Respiratory diseases include chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.
