Disease description:

Recently, I didn't know why, but I often felt my heart suddenly beating very fast, then inexplicably slowing down. Later, after an examination, it was found that I had moderate pericardial effusion. I'm not sure how serious this condition is. Could someone tell me if moderate pericardial effusion is serious?

Dr. Zhang Jianbin
It can be quite serious. If the amount of pericardial effusion is small, or if the underlying disease causing it is mild or well-controlled, the condition is not severe. However, when there is a large volume of pericardial fluid and the patient develops symptoms of cardiac compression—such as difficulty breathing, pallor, restlessness, cyanosis of the lips, weakness, edema, decreased blood pressure, or even shock—the condition becomes very serious and may even be life-threatening.
