The difference between genital herpes and oral herpes lies in their causes and the types of virus involved. Genital herpes is generally caused by unprotected or promiscuous sexual activity, or poor local hygiene, and is usually associated with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). In contrast, oral herpes typically results from internal heat ("fire") or a weakened immune system, and is mostly caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1).
