What causes bilateral hydronephrosis?
Disease description:
I had only heard of hydronephrosis before, but recently during a health checkup, my colleague was diagnosed with bilateral hydronephrosis. I would like to know what causes bilateral hydronephrosis.
Bilateral hydronephrosis is caused by conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or urethral stones. When a patient has an enlarged prostate, urine outflow becomes obstructed, leading to urinary reflux into the kidneys. This causes gradual dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces, along with atrophy or damage to the renal parenchyma, ultimately resulting in bilateral hydronephrosis. Similarly, if a patient has urethral stones, urine drainage is also impaired, causing reflux into the kidneys and leading to bilateral hydronephrosis.
