How to assess the amount of pericardial effusion
Disease description:
Recently developed generalized edema, systemic venous congestion, and increased fluid in the pericardial cavity. I would like to know if there are standardized measurement criteria for pericardial effusion and how it should be assessed.
To assess the amount of pericardial effusion, chest CT or echocardiography can be used. The normal pericardial fluid volume ranges from 10 to 30 milliliters, which serves as lubrication during cardiac contractions. Cardiac MRI can clearly determine the quantity of pericardial effusion and help roughly identify its source. For patients with this condition, it is essential to actively investigate the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment and symptomatic management.
