Urgency is generally caused by factors such as urinary tract infections and overactive bladder syndrome. Congestion and edema of the urothelial mucosa lead to minor damage; when urine passes through the damaged epithelium and the congested, swollen mucosa, it triggers a sensation of urgency, along with frequency and dysuria. Additionally, after being stimulated by urine, the bladder may undergo uncontrolled contractions, increasing its sensitivity. In such cases, even a small amount of urine in the bladder can produce a strong urge to urinate.
