Does cervical cancer surgery require removal of the uterus and ovaries?
Disease description:
Diagnosed with cervical cancer and planning to undergo surgical treatment. I read online that the uterus and ovaries might also need to be removed. Is it necessary to remove the uterus and ovaries during cervical cancer surgery?
Cervical cancer surgery generally requires removal of the uterus and ovaries. If the disease has progressed to a certain stage, conization of the cervix alone cannot achieve complete cure, and thus an extended surgery—including hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection—is necessary. After surgery, regular follow-up examinations of the vaginal stump are required, along with ultrasound scans to check for any abnormal masses. If no abnormalities are found, it is recommended to have check-ups once a year, or every six months.
