What causes elevated direct bilirubin?
Disease description:
During a physical examination, elevated direct bilirubin was detected. What could be the cause of this?
Elevated direct bilirubin may be caused by several factors. First, in cases of gallstone disease affecting the cystic duct, obstruction of the common bile duct by stones can impair bile outflow, leading to elevated direct bilirubin levels. Second, tumors within the common bile duct, such as cholangiocarcinoma, may also cause this symptom.
