What causes elevated total bile acids?
Disease description:
Last week, during a routine physical examination, my test report showed elevated total bile acids. I would like to know what causes an increase in total bile acids?
Elevated total bile acids may be caused by chronic or acute hepatitis, being a hepatitis B carrier, or alcoholic hepatitis. It could also result from other conditions such as intrahepatic cholestasis, extrahepatic bile duct obstruction, cirrhosis, and obstructive jaundice. When total bile acids are elevated, it is best to work with a doctor to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
