Elevated total bile acids in children may be due to a transient increase in serum bile acids after eating, which is generally a normal physiological phenomenon and does not require specific treatment. However, if the child has hepatobiliary diseases such as cirrhosis, cholelithiasis, or acute hepatitis, liver function is usually impaired, leading to bile acid accumulation in the blood and consequently elevated total bile acids. Biliary obstruction typically also results in increased total bile acids.
