Children with itchy throat and cough can take expectorant and antitussive medications under a doctor's guidance to relieve symptoms. Commonly used medications include ambroxol-trimebutine and ambroxol. If the cause is bacterial infection, anti-infective drugs such as amoxicillin or cefixime may be prescribed in combination. If caused by a viral infection, antiviral medications like ribavirin or ganciclovir may be used.
