Alopecia areata may be hereditary; if parents have had the condition, their children are more likely to develop it compared to the general population. It can also be triggered by anxiety, depression, chronic stress, insomnia, or the use of irritating hair care products that lead to allergic reactions or scalp infections. Additionally, alopecia areata may occur in individuals who have other autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo, Sjögren's syndrome, or hyperthyroidism.
