How is congenital funnel chest treated?
Disease description:
A relative's child has congenital funnel chest. I don't know much about this condition. I would like to know how congenital funnel chest is treated?
Congenital funnel chest can usually be treated with conventional surgery or minimally invasive corrective surgery. Traditional surgical methods mainly include the sternal turnover procedure and the sternal elevation procedure. In the sternal turnover procedure, the sunken sternum and cartilage are removed and flipped to make the depressed area protrude. The sternal elevation procedure involves freeing the sternum and costal cartilages to elevate the sunken sternum. Minimally invasive corrective surgery requires placing a specially designed shaping metal plate into the pleural cavity, passing it behind the sternum and rotating it, then fixing it at the outer edge of the thoracic cage to achieve correction.
