How to treat a 2mm atrial septal defect in a newborn
Disease description:
The baby was just born and found to have a 2mm atrial septal defect. How is a 2mm atrial septal defect treated in newborns?
A 2 mm atrial septal defect in a newborn does not require surgery initially; regular monitoring is recommended, primarily to determine whether the defect is progressively enlarging. Therefore, it is advised to have a hospital follow-up examination once a month. If the defect remains stable without enlargement, no further treatment is needed. However, if the atrial septal defect increases by more than 5 mm, or if palpitations occur during physical activity, closure or repair of the atrial septal defect should be considered.
