Our child was diagnosed with metabolic acidosis right after birth, and we don't know what caused it. Could you please explain what neonatal metabolic acidosis is?

Dr. Wang Mingxuan
Neonatal metabolic acidosis is primarily associated with the quality and quantity of protein in the diet, immature kidney function, and excessive renal load. It commonly occurs 2–3 weeks after birth and is more frequently seen in preterm infants, with a higher incidence in those with lower gestational age. Severe cases may be life-threatening, so active prevention is essential. Currently, due to the whey-to-casein protein ratio in preterm infant formulas being similar to that of human milk, the incidence of this condition has significantly decreased.
