Symptoms of cor pulmonale in the final days before death generally include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe bronchiectasis, and interstitial lung disease. With the long-term progression of these conditions, hypoxia and recurrent infections occur, leading to increased pulmonary arterial pressure, which affects the right heart and results in right heart failure. Right heart failure initially manifests as generalized edema, starting in the legs and feet, and as the condition progresses, swelling may spread throughout the body.
