If symptoms of emphysema and cor pulmonale are mild, patients may not experience significant discomfort in the early stages. Shortness of breath typically appears after physical activity. As the disease progresses, symptoms such as dyspnea, chest tightness, wheezing, and palpitations gradually develop. These are likely caused by pulmonary hypertension due to emphysema leading to right heart failure. If the condition is severe, it may progress to respiratory failure or advanced cor pulmonale.
