Can pectus excavatum recur after surgery?
Disease description:
I have pectus excavatum, and my doctor recommended surgical treatment. However, the doctor mentioned that there is a chance of recurrence. I would like to know whether pectus excavatum can recur after surgery.
There is generally a certain probability of recurrence after pectus excavatum surgery. Patients with hereditary connective tissue disorders, or those experiencing rapid physical growth during pre-puberty or adolescence, may have accelerated abnormal rib growth, leading to recurrence of pectus excavatum. In addition, if the patient is too young at the time of surgery, or if surgical techniques are improper, stent support is inadequate, support duration is too short, or trauma occurs postoperatively, these factors may also contribute to recurrence of pectus excavatum.
