Can costochondritis cause pleurisy?
Disease description:
A friend of mine has costochondritis and often experiences chest pain. He is particularly worried that it might lead to pleurisy. I'd like to know—can costochondritis cause pleurisy?
Costochondritis generally refers to inflammation of the costal cartilage, which may lead to pleurisy. Costochondritis commonly causes pain, swelling, and a sensation of soft tissue tension after physical activity, resulting in chest tightness and shortness of breath in patients. If costochondritis is not promptly and effectively treated, bacteria or viruses may infect the pleura, leading to pleurisy.
