After iron deficiency anemia causes glossitis, the tongue coating typically becomes thick and greasy, sometimes appearing white. Some patients may also develop atrophy of the lingual papillae, and in severe cases, this can lead to difficulty swallowing. Additionally, patients with iron deficiency anemia may experience dry skin, brittle and easily shed hair, flat nails lacking smoothness, and nail fragility.
