Strabismus refers to the inability of both eyes to simultaneously focus on the same target. It is a disorder of the extraocular muscles and is commonly seen in young children. The main causes include heredity, decreased tone of the ocular rectus muscles, and imbalance in eye muscle strength. Common types of strabismus include esotropia, exotropia, and hypertropia or hypotropia. The complications of strabismus include reduced or lost stereoscopic vision; individuals with suppression in one eye may develop amblyopia, diplopia (double vision), and visual confusion.
