With active treatment, vision loss caused by dry eye syndrome can be partially restored. In the early stages, dry eye mildly affects vision; as the condition progresses, filamentary keratitis may develop, making symptoms intolerable. In advanced stages, corneal ulcers and corneal perforation may occur, possibly leading to secondary bacterial infection. Once corneal scarring forms, vision can be severely impaired. Treatment with artificial tears is more effective than conventional eye drops.
